The Twilight Syndrome

Coachella festival - where mainstream goes to die

Indie is quickly becoming the new mainstream, which means that hipsters everywhere are weeping. Because, really, what is a hipster without their music?

Let's look at the facts.

Contra debuted at number 1 making Vampire Weekend the first independent act to have done so without ever having signed with a major label. More so, Pumped Up Kicks (dis my jam!) has been rounding up the top 3 for quite some time. And don't let me get started on all the indie bands and artists that have been featured in the soundtracks of major motion pictures (i.e. Twilight) and the CW shows.

So, why is indie music so popular? I think it's because, in theory, it's something new. Who isn't tired of Katy Perry's dance-pop club bangers or Nicki Minaj's fake British accent? Then again, it could be just a trend. Like the "revival" of Doc Martens boots, Jeffrey Campbell shoes, cross rings or ripped jeans.

Indie music will probably remain "hip" among hipsters - no pun intended - but the increasing number of artists that appear in the mainstream media will probably lead them to dig deeper in order to find more "unheard of" acts. And that must be a pain in the ass to do. Because, how will they, then, find time to take awesome photos of themselves to post to Lookbook.nu? That ought to be time consuming.
